Oh Woe is the Treadmill

As I embarked on week six, day two of my couch to 5k training, I couldn’t really get in a groove. The schedule was pretty decent today: 5 minute warm up, 10 minute jog, 3 minute walk, 10 minute jog, 5 minute cool down. But from the time I started the first jog I just couldn’t run right. My calf was hurting on one leg, my knee was hurting on the other leg, and it was really really challenging to get through. So much so that as I finished and slowed down to my walking pace I decided that I would just walk the rest. Not worth getting hurt over it. Well sure enough as I was adjusting my speed I noticed that the incline was still set from the person before me. This has happened to me a couple times but usually I catch it before I start my work out. Needless to say, this time I didn’t and it made sense why all of a sudden things were not feeling right. So I dropped it back down to zero and I felt better.

Then on my second jogging section, I only made it about halfway through before I was just way pooped and had to slow it down to a walk. Even though my spirit was renewed that I wasn’t falling apart from the first segment, I just had zero energy today. I attribute this to a light lunch that was rather quick. We were trying to hurry things along in lab today and ended up practicing through lunch so that we wouldn’t have to stay all afternoon. Needless to say, I’ll be sure to still eat next time. Well, to eat my whole lunch instead of just nibbling.

I think I’m on track so far this week. I hated to have to use the treadmill again but the weather just would not make up its mind today. Raining, not raining, cold, cold and raining, gale force winds, etc., etc. I know it’s not really an excuse, but I haven’t had the time or funds to buy proper cold weather exercise gear. Hopefully I can take care of that this weekend.

Well I need to eat and do my paperwork for class tomorrow. I also need to get a jump start on studying for my exam Thursday. But more importantly I really need to shower because I smell absolutely heinous.

I totally feel different working out if I haven’t eaten. Congrats on doing so well on the Couch to 5k program! I’m only on Week Three..it’s been hard to stay motivated but I really want to finish!

Me too. It’s so easy to get sidetracked and just “forget” but I want to say that I can run a 5k, no matter how long it takes me! I had a mental block during week five and I was convinced I wouldn’t be able to complete day three. So I repeated days one and two until I felt comfortable and then I just went for it. Sure enough I did it! But I’m going to repeat my one from today before I move on, even though I’m at least two weeks “behind” already.
