If you’re unfamiliar with Alton Brown’s show Good Eats, then you need to get your shit in gear. They show them constantly on Food Network and Cooking Channel. Or just type a food/dish + alton brown or good eats into YouTube and you’ll have the episode right there. In the past few months Joel and I have made a habit of making breakfast on Sunday mornings and parking in front of the TV together to watch a good chunk of them. AB KNOWS WHATS WHAT. He’s smart, and he’s snarky, and he makes GOOD EATS!!! Not only that, but he shows you how to do it too. He does away with all the fluff and puff of some more “traditional” cookery, and he won’t keep anything in his kitchen that doesn’t multitask. Basically, I wish we were best friends.
Or Alton. Or Bobby. Or whatever. The point is that I really impressed myself tonight. The theme was puff pastry and it was magical.
I mentioned yesterday that I was making pork wellington tonight and I did just that. I used Alton Brown’s recipe with some techniques from Gordon Ramsay’s beef wellington that I picked up from one of his holiday episodes. I’m not a huge fan of pork that isn’t bacon or barbeque, so Joel said that if tenderloin didn’t convert me that nothing would.
And by Funday I mean Restday/Studyday. I was super accountable and on track this week so I just have to remember I can’t eat the calories I normally would since I’m not officially working out. I do plan on doing some yoga and some foam rolling, but nothing crazy.
I seem to have finally developed the dreaded shin splints. At first I didn’t think that was what it was because it’s on the inside of my shin, but alas, there’s a muscle there too. I guess this is what I get for thinking that shin splints were the one thing that wouldn’t affect me when it affects so many runners out there. Continue reading
Some of my finer moments, natch.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve struggled with my weight. As a younger kid I was more active than as I grew older. I played softball, volleyball, danced, and did gymnastics for years. I also dabbled in basketball, but we were not meant to be mates. Some people just rub each other the wrong way, you know? Once I hit high school, I did marching band and theatre, which are pretty intense if you haven’t participated, but then it leveled off. Sure enough college rolled around and now you’re in charge of your own life, your own decisions, including how much you exercise and what you’re shoving down your face at 2am just because. Hint: my answers include not at all and everything I can, respectively.
Well really, I win, but these recipes have been good. And I mean good. Since I have the day off and don’t feel like doing school work, but I’m stuck at home (more on that later), I did what any good little house wife would do: I baked a cake. A pumpkin cinnamon roll vanilla sheet cake to be exact. And it is, wait for it, delicious.
